7 benefits of exercise that will surprise you?

7 benefits of exercise that will surprise you

Exercise is defined as any movement that makes your muscles work and requires your body to burn calories.
There are many types of physical activity, including swimming, running, jogging, walking, and dancing, to name a few.
Being active has been shown to have many health benefits, both physically and mentally. It may even help you live longer.

1.Exercise can help with weight loss

Some studies have shown that inactivity is a major factor in weight gain and obesity Trusted.

To understand the effect of exercise on weight reduction, it is important to understand the relationship between exercise and energy expenditure (spending).

Your body spends energy in three ways:

  • digesting food
  • exercising
  • maintaining body functions, like your heartbeat and breathing

While dieting, a reduced calorie intake will lower your metabolic rate, which can temporarily delay weight loss. On the contrary, regular exercise has been shown to increase your metabolic rate, which can burn more calories to help you lose weight. Trusted SourTrusted SourcTrusted SourcTrusted Source

Additionally, studies have shown that combining aerobic exercise with resistance training can maximize fat loss and muscle mass maintenance, which is essential for keeping the weight off and maintaining lean muscle mass.

2.It alleviates the effects of chronic diseases

In the past, bed rest and minimal exercise were recommended for people suffering from heart problems or chronic diseases. Today it is completely different and regular exercise is the basis for maintaining optimal health. The lack of physical activity is the primary cause of a number of chronic diseases.

This is because it can lead to a significant increase in belly fat, which increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and ultimately leads to premature death.Further, it has been shown that regular exercise can improve insulin sensitive, cardiovascular condition and blood pressure levels.

With regular exercise, you can prevent the development of these diseases, or mitigate their effects and slow down progress.

3. Enjoy the great outdoors

For an extra boost of self-love, take your workout to the great outdoors. Exercising outside can increase self-esteem even more.Trusted Source

Find an outdoor workout that fits your style, whether it’s rock climbing, hiking, canoeing, or just taking a jog in the park. Even a long walk through verdant pastures and beautiful landscapes can be nourishing for your body and mind.

Plus, all that vitamin D   from soaking up the sun (while wearing sunscreen, of course!) can reduce your risk of experiencing symptoms of depression.

Why book a spa day when a little fresh air and sunshine (and exercise) can work wonders for self-confidence and happiness.

4.Clears the Mental Cobwebs

Between remote work, family obligations, professional commitments, and more, life can feel like a never-ending to-do list. If you tend to be in the problem-solver mode most of the day, exercise can give you an escape for the moment. When you move your body, you’re focusing on just moving your body and getting into the present moment. Doing so reduces cortisol levels and offers some mental clarity that doesn’t involve “what’s next?” and allows you to settle into the present.

5. Your skin will look brighter

Aerobic exercise revs up blood flow to the skin, delivering oxygen and nutrients that improve skin health and even help wounds heal faster. “That’s why when people have injuries, they should get moving as quickly as possible—not only to make sure the muscle doesn’t atrophy, but to make sure there’s good blood flow to the skin,” says Anthony Hackney, an exercise physiologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Train long enough, and you’ll add more blood vessels and tiny capillaries to the skin, too.

The skin also serves as a release point for heat. When you exercise, your muscles generate a lot of heat, which you have to give up to the environment so your body temperature doesn’t get too high, Hackney says. The heat in the muscle transfers to the blood, which shuttles it to the skin; it can then escape into the atmosphere.

6. You’ll boost brainpower and sharpen your memory

With every step or lap of physical exercise you complete, you’re not just working your body – you’re also stimulating your brain.

A study 2017  by Western Sydney University in Australia found that aerobic exercise can improve memory function and maintain brain health as you age.

They found that regular physical exercise not only slowed down the deterioration in brain size, it also significantly increased the size of the left side of the hippocampus — the part of the brain responsible for memory and learning.

In the US published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease in 2019 also “found that people who had an accumulation of amyloid beta in the brain — a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease — experienced slower degeneration in a region of the brain crucial for memory if they exercised regularly for one year.

7. It affects your sleep

Mild aerobic exercise increases the amount of sleep with slow waves, which is actually a deep sleep during which your body and brain relax the most. Several studies have even shown that regular exercise was a great tool to win the fight against insomnia.

As mentioned above, exercise flushes out endorphins from the body, which are feelings of happiness, and in many cases cause tension in our body. They prevent the body and mind from calming down, so it is sometimes difficult to fall asleep after exercise. Therefore, it is not recommended to perform any exercise at least 2 hours before bedtime. After about 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the intensity of the exercise, the body temperature and energy will start to drop, and the body will be exhausted again. Conversely, if during the day you feel sleepy, just exercise can be a great way to take over. Either way, exercise will give you a lot of negative energy out of your body and your mind will be cleaner and calmer during sleep.
